Marc R. Schapiro

Marc is President of the Bel-Rea Institute in Denver, the largest veterinary technician training school in the world. Bel-Rea has over 700 national and international students with job opportunities for graduates in many animal related industries throughout the world.

Marc initially worked in management consulting for a local Colorado-based firm, McCabe and Associates. This job sent him out to many local companies including a veterinary hospital and its affiliated veterinary technician school. Marc developed a good relationship with the two owners of these companies and this led to a job as both hospital and school director. The school, Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology, had only 30 students at the time and the hospital, Alameda East Veterinary Hospital, was a small 24 hour veterinary hospital with four veterinarians. After one year as Director, Marc became a partner in the school and both businesses grew consistently over the next 14 years.

In 1996, Alameda East Veterinary Hospital was approached by a new cable television channel Animal Planet, regarding the filming of a new reality TV series, Emergency Vets. Marc quickly realized the potential of marketing Bel-Rea on cable TV. He had three low budget commercials produced and filmed. The new TV series, Emergency Vets, and the Bel-Rea commercials were both huge successes. Animal Planet is owned by Discovery Communications.

Discovery invested heavily in promoting this new station, expanding Animal Planet’s penetration in the cable TV market. Both of Marc’s businesses exploded with growth. After four years of expansion, the partners decided to go different directions. Marc continues to be partners with Dr. Nolan Rucker, DVM, retaining ownership of Bel-Rea Institute. The third partner, Dr. Robert Taylor, maintained ownership of the vet hospital.

Marc received his BS degree in Agricultural Economics from Cornell and a MBA in Marketing and Finance at the University of Denver. He, his wife Patricia Laxer-Schapiro ‘77, and sons Eric (age 18) and Craig (age 15) live in Golden, Colorado.
