Anne C. Mosenthal

Anne is Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery, and the Benjamin F Rush Jr. Endowed Chair of Surgery, at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. At the time of her appointment in 2011, Anne was one of only six women surgery chairs in the 141 medical schools in the US. A trauma surgeon most of her career, she has spent the last 25 years caring for those affected by traumatic injury in and around Newark, and advocating nationally for improvements in trauma and critical care.

After graduating Cornell in 1979, Anne did research in microbiology, received her MD at Dartmouth Medical School and then completed her surgical training at the University of Massachusetts and Massachusetts General Hospital. She is triple board certified in surgery, critical care, and hospice and palliative medicine. She has devoted her career to academic surgery, primarily in trauma, critical care, and palliative care.

Anne has been a pioneer in the effort to integrate palliative care into the care of surgical and trauma patients, helping seriously ill patients with surgical disease, live as well as possible for as long as possible. Her innovative work has led to the development of the new interdisciplinary field of Surgical Palliative Care as a subspecialty of surgery.

Anne is dedicated to improving health care and access, especially for those who traditionally were underserved, through the development of the next generation of physicians. Nationally and internationally recognized as one of the leaders in the field, Anne is a mentor and role model for students, residents and faculty around the country.  She has spearheaded leadership and coaching programs in academic medicine at all levels, particularly to advance women and other under-represented groups in surgery. She is most proud of receiving the Olga Jonassen award for mentorship from the Association of Women Surgeons in 2018.

Anne is married to Peter Rice, and lives with their two children and beloved husky in New York City.
